If you don't want to upgrade right now - you can just use the RAW software that comes with your camera to open and adjust the images and and save them in a PS friendly format.....

Use DPP to convert it, then use PS7.

Darn, and just when this dinosaur learned (about half way) a software too. I used Elements 2.0 before that. I do have Elements 5.0 that does stuff that PS7 does not even do. Oh well add to my list. I think that Santa is just shaking his head at me though.

Dng? - 12-19-2007, 07:07 PM

Does Photoshop 7 recognize adobe's DNG format? If it does, you might be able to download the stand alone DNG converter from Adobe, convert the raw file to DNG, and open it that way.

I have faststone image viewer 3.3(a freebie). You can open and convert D40 raw files with it also.

If you don't want the full upgrade from PS 7, you could just get a copy of Elements. It's alot cheaper, and I think it has the same RAW conversion plug-in as CS3. It would also give you access to a few of the newer PS features.

Yeah, I think the DNG conversion would work, It just adds an extra step.

I guess I don't know what DNG is. I do have Elements 5.0, though.

DNG is Digital Negative. It is a file standard that is a non-proprietary RAW format. If you convert the native RAW format to DNG, you preserve all the RAW data. Then the DNG can be used to do the editing in any platform that recognizes it. I think all the decent editing platforms do recognize. The champions of DNG are hoping that people will adopt it as a standard format so that it will be reliable for years to come. One of the problems with every camera having its own raw format is that, in a few years, all those RAW files might be unreadable unless you have both the original software and an operating system that can run the software.
