Print on metal? - 12-20-2007, 09:45 PM

Anyone ever print on metal? I have some prints I need to do for a group and one of the things we thought would look really cool for them is printing them on metal. I have seen galleries where it looked as if the print was some sort of adhesive surface (surface mounting I suppose) that is actually put down on the face of brushed aluminum. It has a very cool look for certain kinds of prints.

Anyway, that is sort of what I want to do, but I have no idea where to even begin to find someone who can do such a thing?

Any ideas or experience with this?

Thanks,
Todd

Here is the place you need to check out. I have seen this and it is rather impressive. I haven't tried it on my own printers, as I don't want to take the chance. But their final product is very cool!

Try any commercial print shop.
Durst makes a printer that will work with many surfaces.
You could also have a printer wrap it using the car adhesive wraps.
there used to be a liquid elmusion which i put on wood.
that was in my darkroom about 15yrs ago.

I work at a Graphics Shop as a Designer, but we only do Vector work, which means we only use, solid colors of vinyl, or custom colors, no digital printing. Sometimes we do need digital so we send it off to another company in town, and if your just wanting to be able to see the graphic, and the metal so it almost looks like it's as one, they would probably print it on a clear vinyl (what they use on car windows) and slightly fade the picture so it appears to be in the metal. Or if you ever wanna goto one of the sign shows in Dallas normally, GSG, or others throw them. They have machines there where you can use a inkjet printer, and basically black lights to make a "dark room" effect, which burns whatever you print on special paper into whatever material or object you set on top of it in the box. I know I probably forgot a few periods in my rant.. haha but let me know if you need any help.

I can get this done for you. The printing is done directly onto the aluminum with the ink bonded onto the metal.

The metal I use is lightweight aluminum. You can get the aluminum sheet as brushed metal, white, black, and I think gold as well. I can print on wood and plexiglass as well. I can easily produce a photo large photos. I printed a dragonfly upon a bluebonnet on a brushed metal at 2.5 ft x 4.5 ft. I must warn you that on brushed metal, the colors a bit muted and whites are not printed such that the metal shows through.

PM me with size and material (lightweight aluminum, wood , or plexiglass) and I will respond with an estimated cost.

PS I forgot to say that I can print photos on most cloths, fabrics, banner material, and all kinds of paper.
