I think you achieved what you set out to do. The only thing I would have done differently is not have him move the piece in front and shot the whole of him a bit wider so as to not cut off that top feather.

Did you know you were planning to convert this one to an older look or did you decide that afterwards. If you decided afterwards good thought because there are a few things in the color one that would have made this less then ideal and yo saved it with the concervison.

Saundra: this was taken spontaneously. It was sometime later that I really learned to like the pic and decided to convert it. I like his expression, so I was'nt so concerned with the feather being included. Thanks!

First of all, the Photoshop work is well done. However, what you have created is the look of a damaged photograph. My home is full of 50,75, and 100+ year old photographs. They aren't damaged in any way. Except for clothing, hair styles and an occasional automobile, there's nothing about the photograph to indicate it's age.

So, try again without the damage. You may be surprised.

I agree with Wayne, I think the warmtone monochrome conversion would have been sufficient to give the image a nostalgic look without the faux damage.

It's a very nice image, and I like the framing. Indeed, I like the fact that you have cropped out most of the background as it was distracting (to me) and brought the subject closer into the picture. I like being able to see his face. I agree with the last two posters, though. The faux damage is a bit overdone. In fact, the "damage" on either side of the image is to parallel and symmetrical -- I don't know that real damage to an older print would be so uniform. As they said, that warmtone monochromatic look just rocks. See what might happen if you only tried that alteration.

Yeah, maybe too much symmetry and a little overdone. Here it is without the faux effects...
Thank you for the feedback. I truly value your opinions.

There's something about the skin tone in both the faux version and the new version that just screams "digital" to me. I think you did a really good job on the conversion, but to me it at best suggests older processing, and I don't think I would be fooled if someone tried to pass it off as an old picture. Maybe I'm wrong. It would be interesting to see how it came out in a print. The key, I think, would be to getting paper that looked properly aged.

Sorry the non-damaged one to me doesn't work. I want to look at the tree and the greenery hanging down behind his head.

GOOGLE around and see if you can find a platinum print action for photoshop. While you're GOOGLEing see if you can find some examples of real platimum/palladium prints. I'm guessing, but I reckon you are after the look of a platinum/palladium contact print.
