Apple releases Aperture 2. I use LR myself, but I thought others might be interested. Plus, it makes me think LR 2 isn't too far off in the horizon. http://www.macworld.com/article/1320...aperture2.html | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. Great news. I hope it fixes the problems with Leopard.

There was a Leopard update yesterday too, so that may fix any problem with Leopard and Aperture 1.

I have not upgraded to Leopard because of the problems. I'll go ahead and do it now, before I upgrade to Aperture 2.

I don't want to steal the thread, but what do current Aperture users think of it? Does it do things Lightroom can't, or vice versa?

I've found that all of the Raw Converters perform "BASICALLY" the same operations..... just using different algorithms to perform the final output.
I have what I consider to be the Top 3 Raw Converters:
•Adobe Lightroom
•Apple's Aperture
•Phase One's Capture One Pro
In my opinion, neither Lightroom nor Aperture can come close to the Color Depth and Sharpness that a Capture One Pro file produces. It is absolutely SUPERB..... not to mention that since I use Canon Cameras, I can tether directly to the Program without using Canon's Software. I do like all three applications..... even though Aperture has some of the coolest effects and features!
EDIT: I just saw some of Aperture 2's "NEW" features and noticed that they have now gone to Camera Tethering for both the Nikon and Canon Cameras. I didn't read which ones, but I'm sure that should at least be a BIG PLUS!!! O.K. Adobe Lighroom, "Where are You....." (hint~hint)

I must be an idiot because I could NEVER ever understand how to use Capture One. I tried several times and just have a mental block with it or something.
On the other hand, I love the user interface of both Aperture and Lightroom, use both and don't really see a clear cut advantage to using one over the other although each one has things i like better than the other.

I must confess, I love Aperture and would be at a standstill without it.
Most functions that I would use in PS, Aperture has, so I go into PS only for the plug-ins or a few other functions that Aperture does not provide yet.
but honestly, It's what one gets used to...
The competition is what's making the programs get better and better.

Tony, where you been?
Without you at the Apple Woodlands store there's no reason to go.
It's so full all the time that I don't bother going there anymore.

From the linked article, it looks like Aperture has added the raw functionality that ACR had and it didn't: Shadow Recovery, Clarity slider, Vibrance, Vignetting and some other things. And it looks like it is also giving a more advanced retouching tool, with softness and feathering included on the retouching brush.
I can't speak to lightroom's DAM abilities, but I had thought that Aperture was at least on a par there anyways, if not a little more advanced. It looks like they have upped performance speed. Right now, I'm just using Bridge, ACR, and PS. I like the ACR user interface more than Apertures, and I like the idea that the sidecar files created by ACR are visible in Bridge.
That said, if the reviews of the new version are good enough, I will seriously consider switching from Bridge to Aperture.

I have considered it, but I never purchased Aperture because very few people I have asked, seemed to think it was really worth the money, as compared to LR, or some of the others.
As for C1 Pro. On the PC I found it very easy to use. The Mac version...not quite so easy! Phase one seems to really be dragging their feet on getting the Pro version up to v.4. It's perhaps because their Pro price is now outlandishly high. Now that they have some real competition for RAW conversion, and their 'Light' version does almost everything the pro does for around 1/4th the price! They did just (finally) update the current Pro to officially include some newer Canon and Nikon cameras that have been out for months now. I dunno about Phase One!!!! Since there are no longer any new Magne Nilson profiles, I think most of the others do better color output.
Back to Aperture, I suppose if I could find it at a real decent price somewhere, i would go for it. But unless I hear some real glowing comparison reports on v.2 vs LR, I'll still hold off a while longer.

I'm tempted to give Aperture 2 a try. IN MY OPINION it's got better DAM capabilities (or at least 1.5 did) than LR. It would be really nice if Aperture 2 would read xmp sidecars when importing. I can't find any mention of xmp anywhere in the new web pages.
I used C1 a long, long time ago. I think I'm still a beta tester, though I haven't even downloaded a version for a few years. Hopefully they've fixed their yellows by now!
