Do you save your raw images to a cd or convert them to jpeg first? Will it matter overtime for family photos in jpeg?

I always save everything in RAW I can make those a jpeg when ever I have a need for one. Saving only in jpeg would be much like tossing the film negatives and keeping the 4x6 prints for reprinting later.

I shoot RAW + Jpeg and I use a Belkin Burnaway and burn my CF cards directly to DVD right out of the camera. This is my "negative". I use the jpegs for our sales sessions then go back to my original DVD and pull off only the RAW files that the client ordered from.

Thanks Don. Good to see you back. Finally almost finished with my home studio. High key seems to work well. Mainly do a lot of outdoor so haven't shot in it much. Here is my first. Still need a second background light.

Saving the RAW files will give you the most opportunity to get back to square one for processing, and it's something I've just started doing recently. I also save JPEGs that I've done considerable work on.

I've read articles about some concern that the lack of a RAW standard from manufacturers, even among their own camera models. There's the chance that someday, you might have RAW files that your current software won't open. So far, that's not affected me.

Adobe has its DNG (digital negative) format the company claims it will support as long as it is in business. The conversion is a free download from Adobe.

It all depends on what you want to make sure you have in the future. I save everything to my primary hard drive and then a secondary mirror drive. I do not save anything to DVD/CD because the price of extra external hard drives is really cost effective now days (i.e. 1TB under $300, 500GB under $200, etc...).

If your hard drive goes out, you loose all your images unless you pay to have it backed up.
It does not take a lot of raw images to fill up a CD. Goodness, cannot win.
