Yup, LAB is a great way to naturally boost color. Like anything else, just be careful not to over do it.
Check out the book "Photoshop LAB Color".

The lead flamingo is already carrying alot of greenish yellow in the original with the water reflection. I would try locking the curve on this color, especially in the A channel. This should allow you to steepen the reds, without exaggerating this "miscolored" reflection. You could do the same in the B channel, but that could be trickier. My guess is that there is a yellowish aspect to the red feathers, but that it is not as yellow as the water. So you might be working at cross purposes in this channel.
