Canvas prints...I am concerned I may get addicted... - 04-14-2008, 11:16 AM

After having used Simply Canvas (and I know other printers can probably deliver comparable work), I really see only using canvas for displaying my best stuff in my studio/home; at least for a while.

I used to be more of a matting and framing guy; and I even used some of those $5 quick frames from Hobby Lobby to simply throw a print in and hang on the wall.

But after seeing the results of 3 of my best photos come out in such a sterling fashion from this printer, I think I am going to keep it going for a while. What I really love is the ability to have custom sizes done as easily and for no additional premium over traditional sizes.

I am awaiting a bluebonnet photo to come back at this time and really cannot wait to hang it.

Anyone else got this bug?

I've been thinking about catching it, but I think you've got me convinced. I've seen large-scale canvas at seminars before, but I'd love to see some of my own best work treated in such a nice way, too.

You know, the ones closest to us and see our work all the time really do not give the "oohs" and "aahhs" like many who don't even know you are a photographer.

That being said, when my wife saw these first 3 canvas wraps (one was a floating frame and really looks the best) of pictures she had seen many other times, it was as if she had seen them for the first time.

Please really do not get a good feel for photograph, usually, until it is a size they cannot help but ignore. I think this is why gallery prints are the size they are, etc.....

Let me know how things turn out if you get some done.

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on canvas for a while. Just for grins, what kind of pictures do you think would look best on canvas? I think that's the part that has me hung up so far. How do portraits compare to landscapes on canvas?

Well, I have done two portraits (1 by a window inside, and the other outside in a park), and a wildlife shot of some ducks on the water. Each one is a different color mode (i.e. BW, sepia, etc....). One portrait has an effect where it is BW, but with a glow and a tad of sepia that you can tell it isn't pure BW but close. This printing company, simply canvas, did a fantastic job of having them come out just like my monitor showed at home (I expected this because my monitor is calibrated and I am picky). The ducks were a sepia and I had them done in a floating frame where it is a canvas wrap mounted in a frame and looks like it is floating in this mahogany, solid wood frame.

The bluebonnets will be more like the ducks and not a sweeping landscape shot. I intend to get a shot I took on our Alaskan cruise we took last year done and it will be more like what you are asking about in terms of landscape work.

Hope that helps.
