Over-Photoshopping = Pet peeve of mine - 04-14-2008, 05:38 PM

This drives me crazy. When a photo is really fantastic to begin with, and it gets screwed up by over-photoshopping. Ex, a little gaussian blur is ok, but when the subject looks like they are little glowing, you know you've photoshopped too much. Or, when an image of a perfectly photographed baby is photoshopped so much to look like a doll. It was beautiful before you touched it! Now it looks fake!

I am of the school of thought that the photoshop editing shouldn't distract from the basic concept and composition of the image.... Although its a completely different discussion for graphic design of course.

....stepping off my soapbox.

Takes a confident man to admit that.

i agree, there are times when maybe a boob lift, tummy tuck and nose job are appropriate but making a 200lb person look to be 100lbs and making a size A cup girl look like a DD cup...well that is a bit much!

Unless you're a plastic surgeon. They make good money doing just that...
I am wondering if photogs can start making that kinda money for doing the same thing, albeit not permanent. Nevermind...I know the answer. hehe

Monica,
I understand what you are saying and I have to agree. I like for the ladies in the photos to look real and that I'd want to meet them and hold them in my arms. I don't want them to look like one of Bud Bundy's toys.

for me... "reality" got up and walked out of the darkroom when print enlargers were replaced with photoshop. Is a picture ever "real" or is it just one persons view of reality?

although... last night after surfing epic puerto all day and then slamming rum and cokes till 4am with the crew things were a little unreal too... so i guess everything has its place.

i've said it before, and i'll say it again...

there is no such thing as too much photo-chop. there is only more of it than YOU would like to see. each of us has our limits.

on the other hand, there is PLENTY of bad photoshop, and if it, as you say, detracts from the image....then less might have been better in that case.

and...life before photoshop wasn't "real" life, either. life just got interpreted in a different way. ansel's highlights and shadows only looked the way they did after he came out of the darkroom.

now...who's got a rum and coke for me?

wp.
