Question Looking for a backup program... any suggestions? - 04-18-2008, 06:23 PM

Looking for a backup program... any suggestions?

What i am looking for is...

Example setup...
M: <-- Working Photos External Drive
R: <-- Exact mirror of M: - The back up drive

I want to be able to run a backup and have my entire M: drive backed up to the R: drive. No compression, no zips, no fancy file extensions etc. Just the exact duplicate folders and files.

I also want to be able to run a backup from time to time etc and let the software only update the R: Drive with the newest and/or edited files from the M: Drive. In other words, it's a differential backup...

Any ideas and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I use a batch file and xcopy with /a and /m flags... (of course with /v and a few others, too)

Abel,

Here is a great solution at a cheap price: Always Sync. I use this on my work drive to make sure all edits and changes are transfered to the backup drives and NAS's on my network. It is all accomplished in the background. Once you tell Always Sync to sync drive M to Drive R, it will always start and transfer changes every so many (you specifiy) minutes, days etc.

Here is the website: ALWAYS SYNC

It is only like 19.95 for a Pro copy. Very easy way to keep your drives "mirrored" without complicated raid set-up.

I built my own Windows Home server from scrap parts just laying around. Plus I bought a few 500 gig hard drives.

its backs up every thing and mirrors every thing daily, weekly and monthly.

the Windows Home server has many other features as well, like remote login from where ever to upload and download files

you can try it for 120 days free, just pay like $5 for shipping.

Im sure there are some other flavor of "home servers" based on other OS's but I drank the Windows cool aid.

Hi Abel,

You didn't specify if you are using PC or Mac. On PC I use two programs, InSync (http://www.dillobits.com/insync.html) and Second Copy (http://www.secondcopy.com/). Second Copy is great for copying, but slow as it allows you to easily work on the computer while it works. InSync is great for fast copying and synchronization of files. My wife is currently using it on graphic files she's preparing on 3 computers - over 200,000 files total! I use it to back up my backup drive to external drives. Note that neither of those programs do drive mirroring - they just copy files. So hidden or system files may not get picked up. It has never been a problem for me.

Best regards,

+1 for Syncback. I used the free version for a while and liked it so much I bought SyncbackSE. I have used it to move many small files and even a 105GB file and it worked flawlessly.
