problems converting BW - 04-23-2008, 09:47 AM

I have done this technique before and I still have the step by step how to but for some reason this is not working on either of my computers...I am trying to convert a pic to Black n white and add color back in...this is what I am doing...

adding a saturation/hue layer
turning saturation all the way down
clicking on brush
then before when i went across the pic the color would show...white erased it, balck added it....

any idea what i am doing wrong?? maybe i am not getting the black brush or something..??
Thanks

You need to add a mask to the layer to be able to paint back/remove color.

Yeah, if you are using photoshop, go to Layer --> Layer Mask --> Reveal All.
Now make sure the layer mask is selected in your layers palette and use black to "erase" that layer revealing the layer below. Use white or the eraser tool to bring it back.

If you create an adjustment layer, then there will be a layer mask to the right of the icon for the layer - it looks like a white rectangle. You have to click on that white rectangle to select the mask instead of selecting the layer itself. Does that make sense? Then you can paint with black to "erase" the layer mask's effect and paint with white to re-add it. Check out this screenshot I found on the web:

if you click on the box with the "T" then you're editing that text layer. If you click on the white box to the right of the "T" icon then you're editing the mask. I hope this helps.
