Does anyone know what the point of a clipping group is and when it is appropriate to use one???

Yeah, you use a clipping group or clipping mask when you want to isolate an effect of a higher layer or adjustment layer to the masking of the layer beneath it. I believe you can choose a clipping group when you apply a new layer adjustment or you can hold the Alt (PC) key and click between two layers to make the upper layer a clipping group. Does this help?

Simple answer - A "clipping group" is a group of clippers.
Detailed answer - More than 1 clipping mask in a group so its easy to turn on or off as opposed to individual mask layer turn ons or off - its the master switch on your house breaker box.
Not too many use more than 1 clipping mask so group is kinda out there.
But you might want this in a HDR use.
