getting the hang of the cloning and healing tools was one of the things that i found most frustrating about learning photoshop, so don't fee bad! there a lot of subtle nuances that don't get covered in tutorials....

A great tool to use for that is Vanishing point filter it pretty much rocks at removing items such as power lines and other distractions in photos.

I often reduce the opaqueness of brushes I use for cloning and repeat strokes to get where I like the image. This image is a combination of that, healing brushes, and paint and blending brushes. I cropped the image and as you can see I altered the temperature, contrast and brightness.
