printer profile help needed - 05-09-2008, 08:09 PM

I have calibrated the monitor and set up everything by the book, I think and this is the image and the second is the print preview and the print does match the preview, what am I missing ? photoshop cs3 and epson 2200, tried all kinds of profiles and the one that looks best is the monitor profile in place of paper profile.

Gary, You may have already checked this, but make sure that you have only PS doing the color management - you need to turn off the color management by the printer (to tutn off the printer color management, you need to go into the printer driver settings).

Take a look at this tutorial: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps1...10_print_1.htm

Well I hate to tell you this but what that means is you need to go down and buy you a new 19" printer and give you dear sweet daughter your old "broken" 13" one

I can't get a good print with CS3 with my Epson 2200 either. A google search of the web
showed that I'm not alone. I deleted CS3 from one computer just so I could use CS2 to print (CS3 took over all of the settings while it was installed, and I'm not computer savvy enough to fix that without an uninstall). Some people let the printer manage colors as a work around.

Well that make some sense, but Cs3 worked fine on my XP and now I have Vista and had to get a new driver for Vista so maybe its a Vista thing?
thanks that gives me something to go after

I learned the hard way: I downloaded the "correct" profile for Moab entrada and my Epson 1280. The prints were way too magenta. Prints on Epson paper with the Epson profile were decent. After a frustrating weekend, I switched to the Epson profile for the Moab paper. Success! I also found similar stories on the internet. Had I used GOOGLE first I could have saved a lot of time, paper and ink.

Digital printing seems to be a very tricky business. Good luck!

If you really care about color get and read this, Real World Colormanagment.

Then read the Digital Dog's book.

The fact that your Epson 2200 was working before you started using Vista is interesting.
I'm using XP. I made sure that my settings in CS3 are identical to the ones I use in CS2, but no luck. I even tried printing from a different computer with CS3 (my laptop). No luck.
The colors weren't just a little off. They were awful. Other people on the web reporting this problem were also using XP.

Another glitch I found: The print preview screen from my Epson 1280 goes green when printing B&W. I turned off print preview. It certainly didn't match the monitor or the print. I'm using XP Home if that matters.

I would never expect a screen to look like a final print even with good softproofing and a correct viewing envirnoment. Nor would I judge a print unless it is looked under the correct light temperature.

I'm with you John. Back in the day, projected slides and a print from a projected slide never ever looked the same. I would equate monitors and inkjet printers to slides & prints. The print can be very close to OR very far from what appears on the monitor. Real close seems to be good enough.

Well I had my monitor and printer calibrated about 5 years ago by a local photo store, I was using XP and CS2 at the time, I understand the cal is only good for a short time. So I set CS2 for adobe 1998 and tried the paper profiles with no luck, I set the paper profile to the same adobe 1998 profile and I had excellent colors, No not a dead ringer for whats on the screen but very good, good enough to frame and sell a few. when I went to Cs3 it changed things up but I set them back and still get great prints. (same printer driver ) its odd to me to use the same mointor profile for a paper profile but all I care about is really great prints and they match what WHCC did for me. then I upgrade to a more powerful PC and it came with Vista, I downloaded the new driver from Epson for the 2200 and Vista and new profiles. ugly prints so I bought more ram, a video card and a One eye 2 and calibrated my monitor several times trying prints in between cals and different paper and profiles, I have almost used up a set of ink, I bought a John Shaw book on Cs3 and setup like he recommends, tried the setup as recommended by the Macbeth website and adobe and epson web site. the closest I can get is back to Adobe1998 for a paper profile and its not bad, just not great like before. seems like every paper I have prints better on Adobe 1998 for a paper profile. tried to find the book that JohnAStovall recommended but could not find it local so I will order it online. I'm really thinking this is a driver issue and I may go back to XP. I'm tired of throwing money at this problem

thanks to all of you for your help
Gary
