photoshop/lightroom memory issues - 05-09-2008, 09:21 PM

Hey guys I have just recently started using lightroom and have imported a few thousand photos and have found that when I open a jpg from lightroom into photoshop there seems to be a memory leak. Photoshop will shoot up to about 750 mb of memory used and lightroom will take about 250 mb after opening just one file in photoshop. It quickly becomes unuseable and I have to shut both programs down. I only have 2gb of memory and doing simple edits goes to a crawl within a few minutes.

this is a pc, amd 2800 dual core, 2gib corsair. xp pro, cs3, lr 1.4

Ken,
which version of CS3? 10.0.1? or less? What do you have your memory usage set to in PS?
version of LR? 1.4.1? or less?
how many other programs are running in the background at the same time?
do you have a network printer?
does it do it only with jpg or with tiff also?

10.0.1/1.4.1...
nothing else running and nothing else is taking up resources, I have a few network printers but I dont think that is related. I have only seen it happen opening a jpg in PS which converts it to tiff and not at the computer now to look at other scenarios. I didnt set specific memory usage for PS, most everything is default in both programs.

This is exactly why I stopped using Lightroom after the first couple weeks... it just kept getting slower and slower and slower.

When I upgraded from 1.4 to 1.4.1 my LR database corrupted and started giving me problems like this, runaway memory (running 4gb/3.12 shown), slow moving from LR to PS. I finally deleted the LR database and re-imported everything. It's been running fine for about a month now.

I asked about the network printers because there is a known issue with PS CS3 having a network printer listed as the default printer which causes runaway memory problems. certain network printer drivers cause this, but I can't remember which ones. The work-a-round was to set the default to either a local printer or the Adobe PDF "printer".

There was also a PS issue with certain nVidia cards that would cause this same problem. Check the Adobe Forums/support website for more information to see if it might be related to your problems.

hope this helps a little bit.

I actually install my network printers as local with a tcpip port and I actually have not set one up on this profile so that is not it. I have done a backup and check for integrity and have not got any errors. so I assume I am ok there...
