sRGB vs Adobe RGB 1998 colorspace for web posts - 05-31-2008, 11:47 AM

I recently learned on this forum that pics colorspace should be converted to sRGB colorspace before posting for web view. Apparently, the web displays a better rendition of the image in sRGB, as opposed to a flatter duller rendition with Adobe RGB (1998) which is what I have been working in for post production. Here is a sample...

Size: 233.9 KB Adobe RGB 1998 Colorspace

Size: 274.3 KB sRGB colorspace

I can definetely tell the difference!! Thanks for the tip andrewCCM.

By the way here is the original file. I did a whole makeover on my model! Gotta love CS2!!!

For now anyway ...
sRGB is somewhat better for web since its a current standard and as of now versions of Explorer and xxx dont reconize color space {FireFox and some others do ...}.
aRGB is somewhat better for prints but does depend on lab or printer profiles.
Effect intended is also important and flatter can be better.
Universal "always" rules limit creativity and are often bad thinking.
BUT ... Dont forget other things like file color temp compression saturation brightness vibrance clarity CURVES etc.
This often make a bigger difference on many sites.
If u shoot in JPEG - better to open it as RAW and adjust there ...
Shooting RAW is better tho.
Your background will also influence the picture by playing games with your mind and eye ...
so will drugs and other nasty things !!

aRGB is a closer to natural human eye color space and will often appear washed or flatter on any screen because screens cant do as human eye. sRGB ON WEB is IN GENERAL better for human skin tones cause people prefer to be more red than green - green tone skin can appear sick like you ate bad tomatoes. aRGB ON PRINT is IN GENERAL better for other.
The most natural color is often in between the these profiles and your white balance contrast hue curves tint vibrance etc etc are really the best way to get the effect you want.

I just finished reading the D300 Digital Field Guide -- I like these series of books -- where the author, J. Dennis Thomas, talks about sRGB versus Adobe RGB. He said that posting to the web the Adobe version would look flat. Dang if he ain't right. I guess you saved me the trouble of experimenting with it myself. Thomas talks about post processing images as both sRGB and Adobe RGB depending on the intended use of the image.

The lowest common denominator will be the color space the monitor can reproduce - in almost all cases that's srgb.

Send the monitor a larger color space (without some kind of conversion) and everything outside the srgb space gets tossed. That's why those Adobe RGB files look washed out.
