RAW Question.... - 06-08-2008, 02:32 AM

I have never shot in RAW until the past week or so, my version of CS2 wouldnt open it, well I finally bit the bullet and formatted my computer, reinstalled windows, and got PS CS3. Of course it worked just fine with RAW and I havent shot in anything else since. Today I got one of the Extreme III 4GB cards on sale for 49.99 and was playing with my demo 40D at work, I was just messing around and my coworkers were posing. Well after I shot about 40 pics in RAW I realized that there was no way we could view them at work ( Dont have PS there) so I switched to JPEG + RAW and took more, then when I get home PS says it cant open any of them cuz its not the right kind of file, even though they are .CR2, So I save a few of the JPEGS and format the card and throw it into my XTi, took a few in RAW and they open just fine....I am confused why this happens.....can anyone shed some light on my predicament? Thanks

After getting CS3 did you install all the updates? Photoshop itself should be 10.0.1, and ACR (Camera Raw in About... Plugins) should be 4.4.1.

A "work around" for this at work would be to download the Adobe .dng file converter.
I'll try to refrain from bashing PS for making us buy CS3 because CS2 won't recogize the 40D files. (couldn't help myself).
Once you've converted the 40D files to .dng they can be opened in most any processor that has a RAW file capability.
Lightroom will accept the 40D RAW files without complaint.

Previous posters will help you solve your problem, but I'll tell you a little bit of mine just to make you feel better.

My version of Photoshop (5.5) is so old that digital capture wasn't close to as common as it is now. To convert my RAW files, I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional to perform the first few tweaks and convert to JPEG or TIF to then further refine them in Photoshop. Loads of fun! Someday I'll tell you how old my desktop computer is ... gotta start it up with a handcrank a la Model T every day.

Thanks guys, I knew it had to be something small like that but I always seem to overlook small things like that!

Toverman: You would be suprised at what I see on a daily basis, just the other day we had a little old lady wanting us to re install Window 95 on her computer, she refused to upgrade until now cuz there was nothing wrong with her PC, btw that was made in 1996!

I would expect more of this "Adobe Greed" in the future -
So bash on further for the new 5D and the 1DS Mark IV and what you will need ...

Greed is now Rampant in companies & that is esp true w digi photo software hardware ...
I can't refrain bashing these 21st century new version revolutions ...
Does any one appreciate the "Old Days" of a 10 year + IRS depreciation ???

So I assume you guys will provide new prints and do any touchup photoshop (or other image editing program, at least the authors of gimp aren't greedy like Adobe) work your clients want, for free, for the rest of their lives?

Bill - I have trouble understanding your run on sentence.
But when Canon and Adobe provides free upgrades of what has been 20 % better I will do the same ...
Funny no customer is yet this greedy to want a free 20% ...
