JPEGs in ACR - 06-21-2008, 03:06 PM

(Just a review of process and some questions about ACR for JPEGs)

I currently edit JPEGs in ACR to do photo enhancements. When I am done editing all images from a shoot, I go through the process of exporting all the JPEGs to a new folder.

I think this is not the right way to do it - or maybe it is? When I am ready I highlight all the JPEGs and right-click Open In Camera Raw. I then click the Select All button and then set the DPI and dimensions on the link below the picture.

Then I click Save Image, choose a Folder, set the Quality and let it rip.

I'm not too sure if this is the right way - I cannot see the ACR edits to my Jpeg file in my preferred/default viewer (FastStone) unless Save the JPEG file to a new folder. When I edit a RAW file in ACR it creates an "xmp" file with the edits - but for JPEGs there is no such file.

Also, the process of re-saving all the Jpeg files is very resource intensive and I have to leave the computer alone if it is over 100 images to export.

So, I may be a little dense, but I'm not understanding the question? Not sure about using the your viewer?? Anything you do to a jpeg in ACR or Lr is a "destructive" process in that it changes the image permantely. That's the benefit of editing in RAW. The xmp sidecar file actually contains the changes you made to the RAW file--"non-destructive" to the file.

The question can best be explained in the following scenario:

1) right click on a JPEG and say "Open in Camera Raw"
2) desaturate the image so that it is totally black and white
3) click done - and notice the image has now been changed to black and white within Adobe Bridge
4) open windows explorer (file browser) and navigate directly to the directory in which the jpeg file exists
5) expectation is to see the JPEG file as Black and White - however it is still in color

Essentially after the edit has taken place in ACR (Adobe Bridge) the changes to the file in Adobe Bridge do not match what I see in the folder where the JPEG exists. I have looked at the thumbnail and the actual JPEG itself, and they are not in Black and White.

My only recourse is to open the image in Bridge (ACR) and save it to a new folder - in which case it finally has the edit and is in Black and White.

Try this....

In Bridge, while browsing your original image folder (after your edits), click on the View menu and then on Refresh. It'll refresh your thumbnails, and I'll bet that will show the b/w version then.

Thanks Shane, but I think my point is still not clear.

I fade the image to black and white - and I have no problems see the Black and White image from within the Adobe Bridge application. The problem is viewing the photo outside of Adobe Bridge.

After I am done, editing in ACR I close down the Adobe Bridge application and usually switch gears.

I navigate to the directory on my computer where the photos I just edited are located (I am not using Adobe Bridge to do this navigation, I am using the regular Windows folder system - called Windows Explorer).

When I look at the photo that was faded to black and white, I do not see it as Black and White. It appears to be unedited as if nothing has changed in the JPEG - it is still in color. I have tried to REFRESH from within Windows Explorer and it does not change anything.

To help illustrate what I am seeing I have attached 2 screenshots. The first is what I see in Adobe Bridge. The second is what I see in my Windows Explorer folder.

The picture in question in the second screenshot is the file in the top left (I know it is hard to see cos it is small - but it is still in color).
