Question Moving Lightroom library? - 06-29-2008, 12:07 PM

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to move a lightroom library? My 250GB hard drive is almost full, so my hubby added a 500GB drive for me to use as photo storage . . problem is, I don't know how to easily tell Lightroom "hey, all the stuff you thought was over here? it's over there now!" . . . .other than moving and re-importing the whole library, which just seems too much like work :P

Thanks,
Cindy

Let's see if i remember correctly:
lightroom states the files are missing, right click on the folder(s) and re-locate files, lightroom does the rest.

Move the Lightroom Library and the files to the new drive and then point to the new library location when opening Lightroom.

Zepp, I believe your instructions assume that the images are stored in the Lightroom database. If they are not, Lightroom will not find the files if the drive letter or file folder names have changed. So, as Felix pointed out, you will need to specifiy the new location.

Yea, I assumed she was moving everything, library file and image files to the new larger drive. If she is just moving the library file to the new drive and leaving the image files in place she will have to point to the image file drive for Lightroom to search for them.

If you have all your images in one catalog, export the catalog to the new drive, then import the catalog off your new drive. When lightroom opens it should offer you a choice between catalogs until you delete the original catalog.

exporting and importing the catalog should keep you from having to fix your library/folder associations.

LightroomKillertips.com had an entry/video about moving a library between 2 computers - it will work for 2 drives also:
