Do you wanna play with a new tool/process???

Just released by Microsoft yesterday (8-20). It's a free service (at least for now) called Photosynth.

You upload a bunch of pictures from any particular location and it will stitch them all together and give you a virtual world where you can 'dive in' to any part of the location and zoom in, zoom out, and look around.

I haven't tried it yet, still reading the 'how to' process. I'm gonna give it a try as soon as I have time.

Looks like you will need to download a viewer to use the service. Their website is swamped today.

So whoever tries it first, give us a report back.
Start here:
photosynth.net
livelabs.com/photosynth/

Google for 'Photosynth' ... lots more info.

Looks great, nice find! I think they're site has either crashed or is down for another reason.

I saw this information several months ago and was awe struck. This will revolutionize the way photo are viewed and how they are tagged and stored online. The biggest benefit I see from the demo they ran through was that virtual reality could actually become almost indistinguishable from reality. The ability to call upon all the images stored on the internet to create a virtual walk through world actually using actual images is just mind blowing. The demo of the cathedral and how the software was able to determine the exact location all of the images were taken from and piece them together to create a 3D enviroment is amazing.

Would everyone stay off that site... you are bogging it down and I can't upload photos to try!

It's down due to traffic. Duh - you would think that M$ would know it would get a surge.

Tip # 1, keep it to 300 files or less.
Tip # 2, the site was real busy late at night. I was able to start uploading at 8am.
Tip # 3, it takes a long time to upload the files...2-3 hours from here.

I tried it but I keep getting "Collection not Found". I attempted to upload one last night. But i suddenly got the message (mid-upload) that they were turning off the upload service because they were getting stomped. Well, not exactly those words though.
