Using Linux for photography - 08-22-2008, 09:23 AM

Once in a while we see some posts here about Linux, what tools are available there, what are their strengths/weaknesses, etc. So when I ran across this I thought I'd pass it along. There are some gaps I noticed. It doesn't mention Bibble (though it's in the comments, which are interesting too) or possibilities like using one of the Wine variants to run Photoshop, but still it is a good read.

My goal with this entry is to brush a big picture of where Linux stands as far as photography is concerned. What are the achievements, where improvement are needed and being worked on and which pieces are still missing. I will survey what I consider the 3 main areas that an OS has to cover for serious photography work: color management, printing support and workflow.

I don't know or never try to work my photo on linux.
But my company does image processing. seismic processing to be exact. We use Linux for that.
Big 3D theater are also running linux either redhat or suse. Allmost everything is Linux except messaging and Microsoft office application.

You can do quite a bit with the gimp. I'm using Elements these days, but there are many things I miss from the gimp, like curves and scripting.
