i think the deal is how you save the psd after edits. if you just hit save, it keeps it's original name, ie. img1234567-edit.psd, and your updates flow back to lr2. however, if you do a save as "my-cool-picture.psd", then you won't see a thing in lightroom until you import your new psd.

Just a CTRL-S for me. File name is always xxxxx-edit.psd.

Found out that this is a known issue over on the adobeforums. From one of the posts by an Adobe guy:
3. Ghost folder problems. There is no good workaround for this problem yet (other than using Synchronize on your folder), but it will be fixed in the next update. This bug is mostly Windows, but can happen on the Mac if you have relocated your User folder to another drive.

Have you plugged the external drive into different USB/Firewire ports? Each port has its own address.
