Can Aperture or Lightroom do this? - 08-23-2008, 09:53 AM

Sometimes I swear my brain just makes things up on its own without telling me.

But I could swear I heard, that way back when, when both apps were just coming out, that one of them would let you work an image --> then export it to photoshop --> then go back to the app and it would show the changes you made in photoshop. Is this possible with either app??? Is there any way to link the raw image in LR or AP to a psd, tiff, or jpg from PS without having to physically import it as a separate file? To actually be linked and shown in LR or AP as just another version?

with lightroom, you make your adjustments then export to photoshop, re-touch your image and click save, it automatically saves the files as tiff and it show up in lightroom automatically.

lightroom 2.0 the tiffs saves to your folder and does not show back up in lightroom until you re-import it. i am looking into why it does that.
1.4 allowed me to work on the same file make diff changes and it stacked the diff images in lightroom.

Yes. That's how both actually work.
You have your original in Aperture, select edit with external editor (Photoshop), Aperture will then create a version copy in either TIFF or PSD, and Photoshop will use that copy to make the changes.
Once you're done with Photoshop, close and save the file, you will see your changes in Aperture, of the version.

Ok cool, so i wasn't crazy afterall. lol

But it sounds like it's not working with 2.0? And that's what I have right now.
Also, i typically go to photoshop, create layers and stuff, save as psd layered file, etc. I'm assuming at that point I've gone too far anyway?

It would be great if you could do all that crazy photoshop stuff, then save a flattened file that you could link (even if you had to do it manually) to the original raw file in either LR or AP. Cause this way you could still do all the extra stuff like creating galleries, contact sheets, printing, etc from within LR or AP and without having to do a second import of final images.

REALLY??? I usually use aperture and have not seen this happen. I don't think??

EDIT: Wait a minute... maybe I'm exporting from Aperture wrong???

That's the only thing that bugs me about LR 2. I want the PSD or TIFF to automatically show up in LR when saved like it did in 1.4. I wonder if there's a configuration that will allow this?

Actually, if you import the layered PSD or TIFF back into LR you can export, print, web gallery, etc with the PS edits intact. Is that what you were wanting?

Well, the "importing" part was what I was trying to avoid. I wanted to export to photoshop, make my edits and then save it, with LR or AP automatically importing the changes. Looks like Aperture does it just fine.

i've been taking images from lr2 to photoshop and back again - with edits - just fine. all i'm doing is using the "edit in" command, then saving the file in ps when i'm done. haven't changed any settings that i know of and am not using smart objects.

I'm getting the same results with LR 2. When I edit in PH from LR2, and save the edit as a PSD, the PSD does not automatically show up back LR without importing it. I've searched the app for a setting to allow this, but no luck.

I go back and forth all the time in LR 2. My PSD's show up right next to the original CR2 file with all edits.. No reimport needed. Not sure what the deal is with those of you that are having trouble with them showing up. Hrmm..

In case my other posts weren't clear (imaging that! LOL!), let me explain what was happening with me...

Originally, I was making my edits in either LR or AP and then went to FILE --> EXPORT, and saved as a psd file.

That was what I was doing wrong.

Instead, I should have been going to PHOTO --> EDIT IN (in LR) or IMAGES --> EDIT WITH (in AP) and saving to photoshop. After doing my stuff in PS and saving, it automatically imports back to AP.

I found that if you EXPORT in LR2 and have the "Add to this Catalog" unchecked AND have "Stack" unchecked, the EDIT IN file edited won't show up in the catalog until imported. In Library view, export one photo with either of those checked, then the Edit In will let your photo show up after editing.

Well, I figured out what is happening but not why or how to fix it. When I edit in PS (CTRL-E) and save, it does import the edits back into LR. However, in LR my external drive volume is listed twice. See the screen shot below. All the PS edits show up in under the 2nd volume. Weird.

Not sure why my external drive is showing up twice and all the PSD edits go into the second listing. Any ideas? Note that I've collapsed the first listing so you can see the duplicate volume showing. All four of those libraries show up in the first listing also.
