I've always appreciated a good B/W photo, and I've been slowly learning different things about BW conversions. I've searched a lot of places for some good hands-on info about making BW images, and these two sites are great.
Black and White Digital has pretty much everything you need to know in making black and white photos.
Brian Martin has some of the best black and white photos I've ever seen. His site includes a few lessons/tips on how he does his B/W photos.
I uploaded several quick conversions for the various methods mentioned in the Black and White Digital site. Not only did I learn completely new methods of conversion, but I learned a new twist in the Hue/Saturation method...subtle, but useful. There is also a method called the "Gorman" method, which I had never come across before. It's easy to see how useful it could be.
Here are a few quick shots. Feel free to check out the
BW Exercise album I just put up w/ examples of different conversion methods.
None of the images include adjustments w/ anything other than what was necessary for the BW conversion--for instance, none of them include Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, etc.
