Color spaces differences - 09-23-2008, 07:40 PM

I'm having a tough time getting Photoshop, Lightroom, my monitor, the camera and ZoomBrowser calibrated to the same color spaces. The colors going from the camera into ZoomBrowser aren't correct either. I've calibrated my monitor through Natural Color Pro, which is the software that was given with it. Colors generally look correct on it, so I don't think that's my problem.

Here is what I'm seeing when I open a photo in each of the programs:

Lightroom:
Most colors look proper
Reds seem to be turned down

ZoomBrowswer:
Reds are closer to what they are on the camera
Photos are too bright and look washed out in the highlights
Green might be a little too high too

Photoshop Raw:
Yellows look the closest to the camera
Way too little red
Green looks turned up
Contrast looks very high
Brightness looks okay, maybe a bit too dark

Photoshop (opening straight from raw with no correction):

Looks similar to Raw editing
Asks to convert from sRaw to color space
Color space is set up to be the same as the monitor, should it be set to sRaw?

Is there any way to get all of these colors working together and properly calibrated so that the colors will look the same as what they look like on my camera?

You need to understand that the image on your camera is a jpeg image that your camera has already processed so you can't judge the color by that unless you do a custom white balance for each situation. If you are printing yourself then your monitor needs to be calibrated with the printer, paper and ink that you are using. If you are having prints made at a lab you need to calibrate your monitor to the lab. Most labs will send you a calibration kit.

Okay, I understand that Don. How would I go about calibrating or changing the settings within those programs so that they all agree with each other? The visible appearance of the photo changes dramatically when going between ZoomBrowser and Photoshop, even though the data actually doesn't change.

I guess I could equate the change to having a white piece of paper. Under a daylight bulb, it is white, but if we put it under a florescent bulb, the paper would noticeably "change" color to yellow, even though it is actually still white. I guess what my problem is that the color parameters within the actual programs are not set up the same.

I can't help you here as I have o experience with Zoombrowser. I have Photoshop CS3 calibrated to my lab and I use ACDSee as my browser, but I don't fret over the color being a bit different than in CS3, since all images that I send to the lab are coming from CS3. I have ACDSee profiled to my Xerox printer that I use for proofing.
