This may be old news to some people here but I just "discovered" it. Image, Adjustments, Shadow and Highlights. Not for everything but if your image needs a tweak it's pretty handy. I mainly use it to kick the shadows / mid tones back up

This is a good tip, I use it often.

I've read that the same results can be obtained in camera raw using the fill/recovery tools. But for some reason I still fell I get better results with shadow/highlight adjustment.

thanks

I use that a lot especially on the shadows. It is one of my first steps in editting. Lightroom's fill / recovery can do it too, but I think it looses some quality.

I use fill and recovery in ACR too but you have to be very careful with them. I think S/H gives finer control...

Similar and more precise results can be done with curves. Without using a mask there are ways to just adjust the shadows and highlights. The shadow and highlights is prone to giving you halos in the image.. Obviously if you use it carefully you should be ok.

Curves is a powerful tool with too many degrees of freedom for the average photo-chopper. I use it. I like it. Shadow and Highlight is good for a quick tweak...
