Post your favorite Freeware Programs here in this thread... (Edited by Abel.)
Here are several Freeware suggestions that I really use a lot.
1. Irfanview A free image viewer that I associate all of my image files with in order to view them instantly when I click on them. Irfanview users also have a users group at Yahoo Groups. Most of you already know about Iview, but perhaps a few don't. http://www.irfanview.com/
2. DpMagic A viewer that will display your raw images in explorer thumbnails just like normal jpg and other image file thumbnails display.
There is a free version, and a shareware version for $9.95. http://www.dpmagic.com
3. Cobian Backup 6 A free backup utility that I just found that once you have created an original backup with it (compressed or uncompressed), and you run the same backup over again, it will add only the new files in the source folder to the destination(backup) folder. And very quickly! My raw folder and my "My Pictures" folders are approaching 40GB each, and this little utility works like a charm. http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cbu6.htm | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. You left out some.. Picasa
software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. http://www.picasa.com/index.php?tid=Y2NpZD0zNjcy EXIFer
edit /copy /view EXIF data. http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/ IE Spell
check spelling in IE on forums. http://www.iespell.com/
I forgot one of the best little programs out there...
If you like viewing the EXIF data, and just hate to see a great picture and know nothing about it then here is your best friend.
It is called ViewEXIF, it is a plug-in for Internet Explorer, just right click on and image in IE and if the EXIF data is there you can view it. It will not work on every image but it works on a lot. ViewEXIF http://ak.no-ip.com/EXIF/index_en.htm
And there is a lot more out there......
Do you have some free software links for everyone?????

I'm reposting a link I previously had in "Open Talk."
Here's a small, free program I use to batch resize photos for posting on the WWW: PIXresizer 1.0.8 http://bluefive.pair.com/updates.htm

Noiseware Community Edition
Nice noise removal program. The free version will only allow you to save your modified photo as a .jpg, but the pay version allows you to save as a .tif. http://www.imagenomic.com/download.asp

Here's a good freeware image viewer as an alternative to IrfanView which I find to be a tad cumbersome in certain operations -- prolly just me. Vallen Jpegger Image Viewer http://www.vallen.de/freeware/index.html

Hogleg,
I use Irfanview for a lot of things, but here's how I find it most handy.
I always create a new folder and upload my shots to it from the camera.
Then to get a fast, easy first view of my shots, I use Irfanview's slideshow.
Just navigate to the new folder, "add all" to the slideshow, and they display full screen, very fast, no noticable file load time.
I have the file name display turned on, and can make notes of which ones I want to edit, or if they are hopeless, which ones to delete.
Very fast and easy.
I just wish you could do basic file management from the slideshow, such as delete, move to another folder, etc., but I guess that's not really what a slideshow is intended for.

I use it for moving the files from the card to the PC.
Then I just double click on the first file and from then on its just using the scroll wheel on the mouse to go from one image to the next. Now if I want to move a file just right click, edit, move or copy to a different folder.
It has just about everything you could ask for, resize, rotate, batch rename, convert.
Now when I am ready to put my file up on Pbase, I just CTRL click the file I want and have ACDSee make a zip file for me...
I know its not free but for $50 it is one hell of a program. http://www.acdsystems.com/nr/acdsee7...ife/index.html

I've been using ACDSee 5 and more recently version 7. I love the ease of moving files around and back and forth between various editors...BUT lately, I noticed that that main viewer window (not thumbnail view) is always slightly blurred. It's not as clear as any of my other editors or other viewers.
Because of this, I thought my original, unedited pictures were worse than they really were. I had to start viewing editing changes in other viewers in order to see more clearly the effects of changes. This deficiency offsets any of the other advantages IMHO.
Have you ever notoced this about ACDSee?
Regards, Bruce | | | |

Regards, Bruce | I am on ACDSee 7 build 62 and have not seen any problems like that.
I did have a little problem with version 6 and thumbnails not looking right, but I reinstalled and that fixt it....
You may want to check and see if you have a new graphics driver for you card or something like that.
Good luck | | | |

Here's what initially appears to be a fine freeware program and perhaps, a close alternative to ACDSee. Cam2PC has both a freeware and a shareware version. I'm experimenting with the freeware, but like what I see so far. Cam2PC http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/

Here is a new Free de-noiser program I just came across. PictureCooler http://denoiser.shorturl.com/
I tried it on one of my extremely noisy Sony 828 ISO800 pictures and it did a very respectable job.
The program is Free but you are required to register and retrieve a S/N | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
