PhotoShop CS4 w/ Mac G5 (PCIe GeForce 6600 card) - 11-08-2008, 01:33 PM

Anyone running PhotoShop CS4 on a Mac G5 w/ PCIe graphic card? Just wondering how smooth it was running with this configuration. Mainly with standard photo editing type of work. Any problems creating the custom palettes? I'm waiting on the trial version to come out before I purchase. I'd hate to have to upgrade either my graphics card or worse, my machine, to run CS4.

Graphics card will not make a difference in Photoshop, it does all its processing through the CPU and RAM.

Couldn't tell you on CS4 though, as I don't have it. I am still happily running CS2.

No longer true. CS4 uses the GPU quite a bit even in 2D mode.

Unfortunately for Sean, but fortunately for me :-), I haven't had a G5 since last December so I can't answer his question. In theory, however, it should be no worse than CS3 which doesn't use the GPU.

Wow I was not aware of that, hopefully they implemented nicely to take advantage of the speed some of the newer GPU's put out.

Just got CS4 a week ago and am still playing. The program will recognize if your graphics card will support OpenGL and operate accordingly.

Some info on card plugin here: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6cf07

I downloaded the trial version of CS4, which just came available last week. My GeForce 6600 card picked up the OpenGL and the zooms are lickity split fast. In fact, somehow the entire program seems to be faster and I don't think it is my imagination. I allocated the max 3GB of RAM to CS4 (out of my total 6GB). All my action scripts are working without any problems. Now I'm waiting for Configurator 1.0 to be released so I can customize some panel sets to further enhance my workflow and productivity. If you haven't read up on the Configurator it sounds pretty sweet. I plan on buying the upgrade before the trial period expires.
