Challenge - Focusing?? - 11-18-2008, 01:10 AM

Ok so here is the deal.

I had a co-worker send me a photo this week of one of his relatives. He knew that I was into photography/editing and thought I could help him out with his problem. He has this photo that he really wants to print but it is blurry. I have tried to fix it but have had a tough time with it. Can anyone help me out here??

Give it your best shot!! :)

In one of Scott Kelby's books I have he has a method for trying to bring back a blurry image. It only works if it was pretty close to begin with so this one may be too far gone. If no one else has a fool-proof method I will post his instructions. (Mostly because I will have to remember which book and then find it.)

I tried Dave Jaseck's sharpening action - The High Pass action. I ran it twice and masked out the background and some other areas that didn't look good sharper.

I don't know if this is much better or if it would print very well or not. I also had to fix the eyes after it was sharpened.

You can find Dave's action here if you want to try it on a higher res version.

There are also some other sharpening actions on the site that might even work better???

Just for giggles I toyed with it some... you might do better with the original large file. This was a 5 min test. Still pretty poor.. but you might want to play with the tonal contrast on the face only... before any sharping? You can also try a filtered B&W conversion? And blur the background to make the face punch through. Use Noise Ninja or Topez last will help... I didn't.

Like I say... still looks pretty bad.. but given time you could do better. Just some thoughts.
