Photoshop CS3 on ebay - 12-03-2008, 10:28 AM

Hey all,

I need some help. I was looking on Ebay for CS3 and I'm a little confused at the big difference in price for the software. I understand what it means when they say CS3 "upgrade" and I understand what the student version is too. However, what does it mean when they say "full version" or " CS3 extended version" or "commercial version"? I really like the price on some of these but I'm very concerned about getting ripped off too!

BTW, all of the software I was looking at claimed brand new in the box.

It is my understanding that Photoshop is always packaged as a stand alone item. If you "upgrade" from CS2 to CS3, the software simply installs a new program. It may take some of the actions from the earlier version, but I believe it will work all by itself even if there is no previous version.
Commercial, educational, etc. is a marketing plan that allows Adobe to vary it's pricing.
I believe there are a bunch of CS3's on the market because of course there is now CS4.

I hope someone else can either corroborate this, or straighten me out.

The software marked "Upgrade" is a full version of photoshop. However, it will not install unless you have a previous version. If you don't have the previous version installed but have the disk, it will stop at a certain point and asked for the previous disk. I have loaded it both ways. I am running CS4 as an upgrade and it installed without any problems as my previous version (CS2) was still installed.

I have read somewhere else that it is illegal to buy software from a previous buyer as well. It must be bought directly from the company or an authorized dealer (some of which might be trying to sell it on eBay).

But I'm open to being corrected if someone else knows for sure!

I think you can sell or transfer your license for Photoshop but you must go throught their Customer Service group to do it. I found the below link at their site regarding transfering your licnese.

I bought a shrinked-wrapped full-up version of CS3 Extended (not an upgrade version) earlier this year off ebay. I had no problems getting it to install and registered with Adobe.

I bought CS2 a while ago on Ebay. Had some problems registering. Contacted Adobe and got it resolved. Later bought upgrade (CS3) from Adobe.

Make sure that the copy is legal and license can be transfered.
