Canon's Picture Style and RAW - Question - 12-08-2008, 06:32 PM

As per my 50D manual, the settings in Canon's Picture Style that I have selected on my camera will be saved with a Raw file. The camera will not process the RAW file with the settings (as it would for a jpeg), but it will be saved.

Also as per Canon documentation, if I open a RAW file in Canon's DPP software, it will open with the Picture Style chosen on my camera as a starting place for converting. I could back it all out if I wanted to, but it would just be a place to start if I wanted to.

Now to the question:

Does PS CS4 Camera Raw also open up Canon 50D RAW files with the Picture Style settings as a starting place in converting? Can it read the Picture Style file?

I would experiment and find out on my own, but unfortunately my 3 week old 50D is at Canon hopefully getting what I think is a shutter problem fixed...

Patti

CS3 didn't with my MkIII, nor did any other converter.
Only DPP will see and display that setting to the best of my knowledge.
I did that experiment once setting the PicStyle to B&W. My camera displayed it as B&W but my converter displayed it normally colored.

Thanks Paul.

I've been doing some Googling and I think the newest revision of ACR for CS3 and CS4 has some files that approximate the Picture Style settings. I'm still searching though.

I have a 50d and no, it does not open the image exactly how it is taken with the settings you set in RAW. The image looks right.. and then in bridge it will say generating preview.. and then it will become almost too over contrasted and the blacks seem to shoot up. You can just experiment with a calibration setting that works for you though
