resizing to picture slide shows - 12-19-2008, 11:55 AM

So for a friend i'm resizing all the photos so they can put them on a flash drive and show them to her mom and her new digital picture frame. He says the size is 480 x 234 which is really narrow. Do I need to resize them all that size? Can I just downsize them in the shape they are and the the picture frame do the rest? I do not want to give them any size printable....

Most frames will try to resize down. For best results, think about cropping to the form factor...my math is a bit rusty but 4x3 should come close. Then reduce the ppi/dpi from 300 down to 150 or 72. Digi-grames don't do 300 ppi as I recently found out. Then, as the last step, resize the image down to the allotted number of pixels.

I just did about 30 pictures for my family. Giving 8" digi-frames some this year and some next. Other than cropping, I have a rule in Caputure NX2 so that I can batch process them.

the best process I've found, altho being able to print them wasn't an issue in my case, is the following. (I use PaintShop Pro, but hopefully this is generic enough for all):

1) Crop the original to the correct aspect ratio (approx 2:1 in this case).
2) Resize to 480x234 and 72 dpi.
3) save with a moderate compression.

I find it best to resize them yourself, some frames don't do as good a job as others. By doing it yourself you get the best possible results and the smaller files rotate with less delay and take up less space.

You can do all this in Lightroom. Just export them to a separate folder and set the size as max 480 wide by 234 tall.
