Color space - 12-24-2008, 10:13 AM

I have the 7 points by Scott K and he suggested using Adobe 1993 instead of sRGB. The problem is on a web site adobe 1993 looks dull, but in print it is just awesome in color rendition. So what do you use? Do you process two files, one in sRGB and one in Adobe 1993 for prints or is there an easier way?
Thanks

I keep three versions of all my final product images.

- ProPhoto 16 bit layered master in PSD format
- Adobe RGB 8 bit flattened print master in TIF format
- sRGB web sized image in JPG format

I also keep the original unedited RAW (Nikon NEF in my case) file. Having 3TB of online storage is nice

You don't have to process two files, just convert to sRGB when creating the reduced JPG for the web.

AHHA....Thats the part I am having trouble with. When I save a file for the web (JPEG), I can not for the life of me find how to convert to sRGB. I am sure I am over looking it somewhere.. BTW I am using CS3 Extended. Can you point me in the right direction...

srwatters, Thanks for the file info. I was wondering if I should do the same with mine.
I keep the Raw file untouched (Negative) and do a seperate file for JPEGS, but didnt think of doing the rest. Good idea.

From the Edit menu, choose "Convert to Profile".

I shoot in RAW (Nikon NEF)...is choosing RGB in camera better than sRGB? Right now I'm set for sRGB in my D300.

The color space chosen in the camera doesn't really affect anything when shooting raw, except for the in-camera preview/histogram - unless your RAW converter is configured to honor that selection. If you're using Capture NX, by default it will use the camera selection unless you override it in preferences. If you're using ACR or Lightroom, it ignores the in-camera selection for color space so it doesn't matter.

I select Adobe RGB in-camera simply because that color space won't be as quick to indicate clipping on the in-camera histogram, so it's a better representation of the RAW data (though still far from perfect).
