look too photoshop'd? - 01-07-2009, 09:50 AM

so this was from my first studio shoot (learned alot), but i was paying more attention to lighting and such that i forgot to have the model 'smooth' her hair down kinda thing...

1st pic is the original jpeg (forgot to switch to raw for some of the shots, doh), with just an auto contrast applied.

2nd adds the portraiture filter (freakin love that filter)

3rd is the one i'm concerned with. i tried to take out the flyaways and such, and then applied the port filter. but does this 3rd pic look too ps'd? i'm wondering if it's too much of a hard 'line' on the right side of her hair.

i'm actually going to be doing another shoot at the end of this month or beginning of next month, and i'll have a hair/makeup person with me this time to watch for that kinda stuff :)

Too photoshop'd? Absolutely not. Good job, IMO.

Nope, it doesn't look overprocessed to my eyes.
The hair line (edge) on the right doesn't look natural, if you look too close.

But this opinion is coming from an very inexperienced 'photographic eye'.

It looks good - only thing I see on #3 is a very slight color difference on the background above her head - just slightly to the left.... It's barely obvious... but can easily be fixed with some slight fixing.

I'd recommend bringing back the shadows in the hair, and a nice crop to bring her to the front. This would remedy the harsh hair line.
Also touched up something on her right cheek.

Otherwise, I like the model , the light is OK, and the posing is nice.

yeah the light is 'ok'. it was my first shoot, only had an on camera sb800 and a sb600 on the left if i remember correctly :P

and it never occurred to me to just crop it like you did...that would help -alot-, since i'd only have to clean a few hairs on the left. wonder if i have enough mp to do it though, it was shot with a 6mp d50 :/ can't wait to re-shoot with my d80. and i'll have a ton more light too!

thanks all!

To me the only thing that stands out as “too photoshoped” is the back line on her hair. The line looks too hard. #3

ok last one. i left more of the hair in so maybe it didn't look too shopped out.

also burned/dodged the eyes and added some saturization. still didn't add any shadows to her hair, i didn't like how it looked..

it's also really strange that when i view the picture directly from my site, it looks a little lighter/etc than when viewed within this tread when put side by side on the same monitor. is it just me?

They all look pretty good to me. The hair was bugging me because your mentioned the work and I noticed it but it looks ok in #3 just a little weird on the right. In your revision Pic4 there is something weird about her right eye and it almost looks like a lazy eye with the light so bright in it. Overall they look good to me.

Like everyone else, I think the hair line was much too harsh. The last one you did looks awfully good. I like the richer colors in Riddler's version, but it is just a touch too Hollywood perfect for my taste and I think the vignette is a bit out of place for this background. Not a lot of difference though. Is it possible to take a bad picture of someone as beautiful as this girl?
