I have a few pics like this that I want to cut out and do a PS background. I have done sports posters before but have not tried this with posed subjects.

I am trying to come up with backgrounds that will blend and not look quite as fake as the one attached. I aslo attached my extraction with a "green screen" look if that helps.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Well, doing a quality cut-out/selection of a subject is quite involved when you want a professional look (even with prof. level selection software).

The key to a good selection is ensuring the edges blur into the backround with where the transition occurs within a 3-4 pixel width. I think your selection has you most of the way, so you just need to blur the edges with a mask about 3 to 4 pixels. You do this by command clicking on your subject to make a selection of them, hit the mask icon in the layers' palette, then gaussian blur the mask about 3 pixels.

There is some excellent video tutorial on Lynda.com in the photoshop CS 3 area by Wilburn.

I would recommend that with the white shoes and underexposed face on the subject, you either lighten the face, or use a light to dark (from top to bottom) gradient so the shoes stand out better and the head stands out better as well.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks guys.

John your link has some great info! Thanks

Dan, thanks for the input I will check out lynda.com. The cutout I did in about 10+ minutes with the eraser tool just to get an idea on backgrounds. I was playing with different colors and patterns.

Don't forget to leave some shadows, especially around the feet. No shadows is a dead giveaway of a cut-out.
