Sizing Photos - 02-04-2009, 10:55 PM

I'd like to start posting to a photo web site but they require the pics to be 2MB or smaller. How do I change my file sizes without totally screwing them up?

open them in elements and duplicate the original and then resize the one you duplicated to the desired size. that way even if you mess up your original is not being messed with.
that is what I do anyway :)

Image -> Image size in Photoshop.

Make sure you set the interpolation mode appropriately. I prefer to use bi-cubic sharper when downsizing. For most websites, 800 pixels on the longest size is a good choice.

You might apply a bit of unsharp mask after downsizing and before saving depending on the image content.

2MB will allow pictures larger than 800 pixels on the long side. However, speaking from experience, I don't like huge photos on screen that I have to pan around to see. I want the whole picture at once.

Truth. For image postings to the web, 800 pixels on the long side is plenty. Even a jpg with compression set to 1 will result in 800x600 (or so) images around 300k or less.
