Tethered shooting software - 02-22-2009, 11:07 PM

I don't shoot with the camera tethered to the computer very often, but when I do I absolutely HATE Zoombrowser which the Canon's Eos Utility automatically starts when you take a shot. I think I could use Lightroom, but I believe I would have to import each shot after it was taken and it sure would be nice to show up automatically after each shot is taken. What software to you use when shooting tethered?
Thanks

I keep saying I am going to try my Eye-Fi card and have it dump into a directory that has a slideshow app of some sort monitoring. I have a SD to CF card adapter and it works great in all my Canon bodies (SO FAR). I had a LOT of trouble with my first 2 Eye-fi cards that I bought as Christmas presents. However, the replacements seem to work just fine. Still have yet to really try it though.

I only use the EOS Utility and Lightroom. Lightroom can be setup to automatically import photos from a watched folder and display them full screen.

Lightroom > File > Auto Import > Auto Import Settings.

If you are on Loupe mode (E), it will show the newest image as soon as it's imported. I also shoot RAW+JPEG and I have a Smart Collection in LR set to only display the JPEGs. They import a lot quicker than the RAWs and so I don't see dups while I'm shooting. I only wish the Lightroom fullscreen was 100% like Aperture's.

I forgot to mention that I don't have ImageBrowser or DPP installed. But you can change that setting on the EOS Utility too. Look under Preferences > Linked Software. Mine is set to None.

I keep Picasa open, it auto-detects new photos so I can simply move to the next photo as it comes in.

Just tried out the Eye-Fi in my 5D2 using RAW+small JPG and Lightroom. Worked like a charm. A little slow... But it would work just fine if you don't mind waiting 5-10 sec to preview. Obviously, you can keep shooting and they'll upload in the background.

Well at least proof of concept has been completed. Pretty easy. I just wish it could transfer RAW files in the background too. a 2GB Eye-fi fills up FAST on a 5D2 in RAW+JPG. Regardless, for studio use, this should work fine to my laptop.

Thanks everyone for the advise. Manny, I didn't know Lightroom would do that. I just changed those settings & will have to try it later.

Dan

I've been using DSLR remote for the last couple of years for some event stuff that I do around the holidays. It has worked well for me to shoot, and my assistants preview the photo's before printing. Best results for me has been to use a fire-wire between my 1dMKII and the computer. Cautionary note though, make sure your batteries are charged well on your camera if you plan on using for long period of time, the camera battery is source of energy to transfer files to computer as well as to take photos. You'll have to determine for yourself if you like to store the images on flashcard and computer. There may be different file naming convention between the two, so that can be a little confusing when looking for an image.

Randy, Thanks for the info. I really don't shoot tethered very often, but this last weekend I was trying something new with some macro shots & having it tethered let me see the shot a lot better than on the LCD so I could make minor adjustments. I didn't know that it would use up the battery faster, I'll start with a fresh one. The EOS Utility, which I have been using when shooting tethered, uses different filename sequence than the camera does when saving to the CF card, but that's not really a problem either. I always import into a special directory and rename the files before moving them for editing.

I'm going to continue my new macro project this weekend & will be tethered again. I'll give this software a good test drive.

I use Olympus Studio and it works great. I need to try it with a firewire connection to my E-1 though, USB is slow.
