Colorizing Intricate Jewelry - 03-04-2009, 08:15 PM

I have a photo of a close-up of a young lady wearing a cross on a gold chained necklace. The links of the chain are interspersed with rubies. I would like to show the necklace in brilliant color, but desaturate the rest of the photo to shades of gray. But, I'm feeling too lazy to outline every link of the chain using Magic Extracter or the magnetic lasso tool. Is there an easier way to mask off the necklace?

try this: paste a B+W layer on top of a color one that has the necklace processed to the color level you like. Once you place the BW version layer on top, erase the BW necklace to reveal the color. Paste as new layer and everything will align.

Here's where I did this to pull the "normal" yellow cab up and thru a treated layer. Yeah, it's a bit larger, but you get the idea.

Not sure what is available in what ever software you use, but in CorelPhoto-Paint there is a feature called color mask. It does a bit more than that but in all cases you still have to fine tune with mask brush. The more color differential, the better. How about a sample pic.

You could also use Clip Mask in Corel (Layer Mask in Adobe)

I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.

I cannot provide a sample pic because the jewelry is the design of the woman who asked me to produce the photos, and she is worried about people stealing her designs.
