Arrow Lightroom 2 Book I Chose... - 03-10-2009, 10:08 AM

I went to Barnes & Noble last night to look for a good Lightroom 2 book since I've noticed that my workflow has become much smoother and faster even though I havent used LR a whole lot. So I figured with a book I can learn how to really amp up my knowledge in LR since post processing seems to be my weak link in photography, I simply hate doing it because I am so slow at it. hehe..

Plus another reason I wanted to get a book is because Im sure Sonny is tired of fielding my "How do I (fill in blank) in Lightroom?" phone calls. Ha!

So anyways I thought I would share the 3 books I looked over last night in case you guys may be interested in a similar book as well. These were the only ones I saw that were in depth as I wanted, All Lightroom 2 books on Amazon can be found HERE.

-----------------------------------

This is the one I chose, I paid list which was $49.99 (ouch!) and then I see it's available through Amazon for about $28. FAIL. Hehe.

You know I do not mind your questions.

I have the Scott Kelby book if you want to borrow it. It's a great great book. I learned a lot.

If you like step-by-step "how-to" books without all the theory, you can't go wrong with Kelby.

I picked up the Kelby version from amazon last week. Seems decent so far but haven't done much with it yet. What looked better about the one you picked up?

I keep buying books and do read, but not fast enough...I have forums + about 10 books to read...and listen to audiobooks and podcasts constantly.

What "I" need is DVDs/video tutorials.

suggestions?
1. Lightroom
2. other (learning more about light, photoshop, general learning, etc)

I have the luminous-landscape video on lightroom 2. It's quite good for the price, $40

I can watch the video and practice at the same time...

You can get it from Luminous Landscape here.

johnastovall added 3 Minutes and 8 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

I have Martin Evening LR1 book and it was the best out there.

I finally stopped buying books a couple of years ago. I realized that I rarely actually read them. (ADD)... Luckily, I have been able to figure out apps pretty darn quick and look up extra details on the web when I needed. I really need to get one on CS4 and find out what I am missing... LR has been very easy to use, but I have been using it since beta 1. When I started using Final Cut Pro years ago, I did find some of those books to be very helpful.

I am quite sure there are things about LR that I haven't a clue about though.. LOL

i hear ya... i started reading the book today and i learned 2 things from just reading the Foreward portion of the book. i havent even gotten to the actual content yet. hehe

hitting "L" key twice shows image with black background by itself.

hitting backslash key toggles between before and after edits instead of showing images side to side

I originally got the Martin Evening book, but returned it for the Kelby book within the first couple of days.

The Martin Evening book has a ton of great content, and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately, many of the screen shots in the book are low contrast, and really hard to see. This isn't something that would normally bother me with a technical book, but in this case I just couldn't get past it.

i agree randy... the screen caps in the kelby book are far superior...

Evenings books just isnt up to par on that front for sure...

i sat there for like 30 minutes sifting thru each of the books, like like to the B&W section of each and comparing, then going to the web slideshow model of each and comparing, then the nd grad section etc

its was a tough choice indeed

I like anything by Matt Kloskowski. His books and videos just register with me. I also subscribe to http://www.kelbytraining.com/. Many very good classes here.

Terry,

Give us some input on Kelby Training.

I have looked over the samplers and have been considering joining myself.
