resizing VERY small for facebook - 03-20-2009, 07:40 PM

I'm considering offering a special package for seniors that includes a few pics for their facebook page. I want to make them small enough that they can't be printed at 4x6 but big enough that they are a good quality for their facebook page (I'll of course put my watermark on them for advertising purposes;)

I could, of course, do trial and error but in the name of saving time, I thought for sure someone else out there has already been there, done that.

Amanda,

Here are the things to keep in mind when giving a digital file to a client.

Making Prints
Most people can make a decent print at 150 dpi on their home PC. So whatever pixels you give them divided by 150 is the largest size they can make a decent print. Examples: 600 x 900 pixels can make a good 4x6, 300 x 450 pixels can make a 2x3.

Viewing on a Monitor
Displays vary, but most usually display effectively between 72dpi and 96dpi. So whatever pixels you give them divided by the smallest viewing dpi will make the largest image on screen, if it is not altered by another resizing application like facebook or myspace. To use our examples above: 600 x 900 pixels can be displayed as large as 8 1/3 x 12.5 on screen, 300 x 450 can be displayed as large as 4.16 x 6.25.

So it is possible to give them a large viewing size on screen and yet not big enough to print.

Wow. This is revolutionary to have an actual "equation" to go off of. Thank you for providing a principle to help guide this rather than just telling me I shouldn't give them a digital file:) I can't wait to try this out and see how it looks on my fb page.

Your Welcome!

I GIVE away a digital file, suited for monitor or screen viewing, of every image that my clients buys. WHY?

Because if I don't, they will take the picture home and make the file themselves. It is usually crappy, with a wrong color balance and makes my work look bad. If I GIVE it away, I am the hero, they like it, it looks GOOD, they tell others and more people will see my work. They will send it everywhere. Plus it usually means they won't think about scanning at all since I have already done it for them.

Also my second and additional print prices are so cheap, it is easier and better to get one from me than to go to the trouble of scanning it in, taking it to Wal-Mart, and making one themselves.
In this day and age, if you don't adapt, you will get run over.

Make all the money you want to make on the FIRST PRINT.

Once it gets so big, Facebook will size it down. Not sure what that is but it is about the size that Tom posted above; about 450 x 600.
