PowerToys Image Resizer - 04-22-2009, 08:22 AM

Does anyone have experience with PowerToys Image Resizer? I've used it for a long time (18 months) to create web sized images, but I'm in the process of backing up images to dvd, and some directories are just a bit too large to fit on one dvd.
I have an image which is 2592x3888 taking up 8390kb on my computer. When I run Image Resizer on it, to bring it down to 2591x3887, the size is now only 1564kb. This worries me that I may be loosing information in the file, but when I view the EXIF data with Opanda Iexif 2.3, the info looks almost identical, including resolution of 240x240.
Am I safe in reducing my images by 1 pixel each direction and still have printable jpg files?

Thanks for your assistance on this.

I can guarantee that you are losing data. The question is, how important is that data? The only real way to tell is view both images side by side using the medium you expect to display them (digital, print, poster, etc.). Only then will you be able to make an informed decision.

Personally, I don't save jpg images except for web viewing. All my archival copies are stored in psd or tif format. Then again I have 4TB of storage. YMMV.

Well, I am saving the raw & psd files as well, so I guess if I do need to recreate the full rez jpg files, it won't be a big deal. jpg's are just easier for me to view from the dvd.

Being that the whole power toys set of utilities is several years old, I'd sort of avoid it in my workflow. You can always use the Photoshop equivalent or the image processor or write your own action.

I avoid Microsoft software when I can...

I've used this one and it is pretty flexible.
