Editing exif info w/batch processing - 04-26-2009, 06:53 PM

I searched the forums, but didn't find any usefull info.

What I want/need to do is edit my photos in a batch operation that adds "Copyright Information" to each one.

If you do this, what program do you use?

I recorded a script in Paint Shop Pro XI that sorta works, but I don't have the skill to modify it.

Basically, the script opens the "Open" dialog box so you can chose a file. Once the image is open, the information is entered into the exif information, the file is saved and closes. So, I still have to select one file at a time. That got pretty tedious on a 138 files.

Please help if you can.

I'd like to be able to batch process all files in a selected directory.
Thanks

Mike

Mike you should be able to just add it to your camera then it will come out with the EXIF. You do it through EOS Utility.

I didn't see anywhere to add copyright info. I have my name as the owner, but that's all.

Mike, if you have Lightroom you can edit the exif info on one file and then synch the rest. It is really quick.

Thanks Rob. I'll have to consider that option. I don't have Lightroom, Just Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop Elements 6.0 which I'm not very proficient at.

You may have to upgrade EOS Utility to the latest version. I just put it on my 50D and it is below where you put your name as owner. I will look when I get home to make sure where it is. I have seen others who said they did it with their MKIIIs, 20Ds and others.

Well I was wrong. Looked up the instructions for the last version of EOS Utility and the MKIII doesn't support in camera copyright information.

Here is a link to do it with EXIF tags using EXIFtool but it makes a duplicate of you pics.

Here is a link to a program that will let you batch process then information. The free download has some restrictions about the number of times you can use it during a session. http://www.colorpilot.com/exifpro.html

I will keep looking and see what else I can find.

Yeah, I upgraded the EOS Utility but it didn't help solve my problem.

If I was a little more versed in Paint Shop Pro code, I'd have it made but I can't.

Thanks for the help. Just think about those hundreds (or thousands) of photos that could use the copyright info.

Yep sounds like Canon needs a firmware update to make it happen.

Are you sure Elements won't do it?

It's not a very advanced feature and PS has been doing it a long time.

Basically, you want to create an IPTC file in your metadata file. PS and LR will load it on import. Don't know elements but would suspect it would work that way too.

There's part of the problem. I don't know what you are talking about! :-)
I'll try to learn more about IPTC.

Thanks

Sorry Mike,

Some cameras and most software programs allow you to embed "IPTC" information into the data file created by the digital image.

IPTC data is information identifying the photographer and setting up the copyright. IPTC stands for International Press Telecommunications Council -- a body that has created uniform standards for the information. Here is their website:

http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/index.html?channel=CH0086

Most people create standard data that they attach to the camera metadata upon import to their computers (Lightroom does this) or in a batch edit in other programs.

One thing to remember: Putting "copyright" in the metadata is the first, not the last step in protecting your work. Registering it with the fed's is the ultimate protection. It's easy and cheap.

I'm in the middle of litigating a copyright claim against someone who I believe infringed on my rights. I cannot tell you how much easier the action is because I formally filed for the protections.

not trying to start a Nikon/Canon war, but I'm surprised Canon doesn't have any software that does this for free...Nikon has ViewNX that allows batch editing of meta data info like this

I just did a google search and found this:

Thanks Nathan. Sounds just like what I'm looking for.
I'm gonna try the program Westx suggested (exifPro). I sent their support a question and in less than 2 hours the guy sent me the code to do the batch operation. Sounds like he wrote it on the fly.

When I shoot a tournament, I wind up with many pics so the batch procecss is really needed. Thanks everyone for pitching in. If y'all come up with a winner, let me know.

Mike
