Trying for the "300" movie-look...What else can I do? (Image) - 05-07-2009, 03:37 AM

I'm goofing around with PS thinking this senior would like something like this, maybe not, but I'm learning as I experiment.
(He's trains in MMA)

I probably should have started with different lighting during the shoot, but oh well.

I'm trying to get some larger rain drops in the foreground but don't know how.
Also, what else could I do to the image to "improve" it or otherwise make it more similar to the movie poster for "300"?
Do they make a font similar to that?

Thanks!

take off shirt, grow a beard. bring down color temperature big time and desaturate. increase the amount of backlight. maybe some sort of blur / clarity effect. rain streaks need to be longer and more sideways.

in trying to work with what you got...i'd say at least flip the background of the image. that way the light on his face will correspond with the lightning (light source).

i've never done this type of stuff, but i would assume to make the 'sideways raindrops' you could just put a bunch of random dots on the page as a new layer and then motion blur them with the filter in ps?

Is there a simple way to add random sized drops at random points around the image? Filter, or brush?

You could probably search for some type of splatter brush to do the rain with, there are lots of them and I think they might work

A quick version. I desaturated some, added some blue using curves blue channel, duplicated background and ran High Pass filter at 4px, set layer to overlay and opacity to around 50% Then added some rain with this Rainy brush: http://bestphotoshoptutorials.net/20...iny-brush-set/

hey those are cool. Thanks guys. I'll have to check out that brush when I get home.
Although the rain kind of looks like snow now... Hmm...I'm definitely gong to try that out though. I don't even know if I'm going to deliver this to the client, I just wanted to try to learn something.

Yeah, I think I'll end up mirroring the BG. He's a "southpaw" so I'd like to keep him as is, I'll just put him on the right side of the frame with the lightning on the left. I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tips peeps!

Jeremy! Thanks for the link to that brush set! It really worked for me. Just what I was looking for.

Except it only go's one way, to the left. Is there a way to flip a brush, or do I have to flip the layer every time?

Thanks so much!

edit: It just so happens that the subjects name is Jeremy, too...

edit 2: Stupid photoshop keeps crashing. I wonder why? It's on a mac, so it shouldn't, right?...

Ok, Here's what I have, I think I'm finished. Maybe put some "300" style text at the bottom or something.
Does it suck? or is it at least decent?

LARGE
(I suggest a large view to see the smaller drops)

Oh, and the BG from my trip to Colorado:

Yes you can rotate the brushes. See the arrows? Pick the top one first then rotate with the bottom one.

The font is called a grunge font. Google Type Foundry and Grunge Font. There are a number of foundries that have free fonts.

Here's my take on it - took about five seconds with a preset for Lightroom called "Matt's 300 Look".
