Photoshop Emergency! - 05-08-2009, 09:56 PM

I shot a 60th Birthday Party tonight and in going through the pictures in Photo Mechanic and on the LCD on camera all shots are great. When I try opening in photoshop CS3 it is saying the pictures are not the right type of document. ALL shots were done in RAW. HELP! How do I fix this so I can access them and edit them?

Have you opened RAW images from this camera in your PS before ?

I'm hoping your answer is NO.

You'll likely have to go to the Adobe website and download and install the RAW conversion plug in for your camera model.

Unfortunately, Adobe does not make some RAW converters that work in earlier version of PS. I had PS2 and HAD to upgrade to PS3 to get the RAW converter for my 40D.

You can also download a freeware program that will convert your RAW files to .dng files which can then be read by PS as RAW. It's just an extra step.

I am shooting with a 40D and have had no problems opening raw in the past. Looks like I may need to upgrade to CS3 to convert?

I'm confused. In your OP you said you were trying to open them in CS3.
In your last post you say you may need to upgrade to CS3 ?

question again..
have you opened a RAW file from this camera in ANY photoshop version ?

Just use the Canon program that came with the camera and then work on them in Photoshop.

Just use your Canon DPP software that came with the camera.

I was mistaken before. I have CS2. I have opened RAW files from this camera several times.

If you have CS3, then I would think there is a good chance that you have Adobe Bridge? If so, open Bridge...navigate to where the images are, and they should be visible. Then, that should allow you to use Adobe Camera RAW to start your editing...from there, it will allow you to go right into Photoshop.

If you don't have Bridge, then I would think your best shot is using the camera's software. I have CS3 on a laptop and PS7 on my PC, on my PC I use my Nikon View to start with my RAW files and convert to .jpeg. Hope this helps, or hope you have already solved this problem.

Hi Julie,

Take a look at this from the Adobe Support site to see if could be your problem:

Not to hijack the thread, but my mother is having a problem nearly identical to Julie's.

Her RAW images from her relatively new 5DII won't open in CS2. Just as in Julie's case, Adobe says the image is not the right kind of document (I believe my mom said the raw file extension is .cr2). She is able to open the images just fine in LR2.

Maybe I will just tell her to use the provided Canon software.

CS2 is too old to support 5DII. Why use DPP if you have LR2?

That's kinda what I said... she's just so used to PS and hasn't really dived into LR2 yet. Maybe this will be a good learning experience for her!

I like using DPP and Zoombrowser and the Canon Utility program is great when you tether to a laptop. It's easy to run batch routines with DPP and if you have similar adjustments to multiple photos you can copy the adjustments to one and apply to as many as needed.

I think your Mom should at least try DPP. There should of been a copy with the camera along with the other software. Very easy to use and you can update free from Canon.

Nothing against LR2, just another option.

Download Adobe's most recent free raw converter. Batch convert everything to DNG. Save the cr2 just in case. Then try. If that doesn't work, you're probably screwed.

I had to do this when I first bought the 5d mkii
