Help! - 05-10-2009, 01:04 PM

Can anybody tell me how I can get this picture to crop to 10x8 without cutting the 2 girls on either side off. Seems like I vaguely remember something about changing the image size to add more to the border or something. Hope somebody knows.

Why not get an 8X12 instead?

tried some content aware scaling on this image. Still a no go. Unless others have a better idea, I think all you'll be able to do is add some canvas to the top and bottom (border).

You can add a border that would result in 10 x 8. There are lots of ways to do it.

The easiest is to just use the crop tool, set it to 10 width and 8 height and drag the box. Then grab the corners and extend them out so that all of the photo is in the box and you have extra at the top and bottom.

If you want to be able to select the color and position of the added border, do this...

Image > Canvas Size

Look at the width and height and calculate what the height would need to be so that the ratio is 10 x 8. For example on the one you posted, the width is 3.75. I wanted to add a little bit of border on the width side also, so I put 0.25 in for the width (with relative checked) and then I calculated that if the width is 4, then 10 is to 8 as 4 is to x. The math is 10x = 8 x 4 = 32, so x = 3.2.

Since the height is now 2.492, I subtract 3.2 - 2.492 and get that I have to put 0.798 on the width. I chose an off white color for the border and clicked ok.

Then I just put some text in the border to give you an idea of what can be done.

I'm sure there is probably a dozen other ways to do this and probably easier, but these are the two that I came up with off the top of my head.

Thanks everyone, Barry had already suggested a border. The only problem with the 8X12 is the odd print size and framing.-Dora

In the future, leave room around the edges for cropping.

Getting close to 100 years of 35mm film and the 2:3 aspect ratio and folks still insist on printing 8x10. For what it's worth, I find that my 2:3 originals crop to the 5x7 aspect ratio very nicely.

Mess with it in lightroom to see what your options are.
You can select the various aspect crop ratios.

Perhaps you could do an oval vignette on a dark background. This was done very quickly and is very sloppy. Not center correctly either.

Wayne, unfortunately in this situation it wasn't an option, there was a wall preventing any further backup.

Yep, I agree that the border solution can look quite handsome. Here's my take.

You can always stretch the top and bottom. I did a quickie job on a small file, but full size you can make it look better. With this image though I like the border better. With the busy background it looks too funky.

Do a cut out and add a new floor to get the 8 x 10. Sorry about the floor it was one I had handy. Don't have many floor fills and did not want to make a new one. Cut out was a sloppy but tough on a low res image.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I do like the black border. I hadn't thought about changing the floor but had considered extending it.
