How do you label your CD's / DVD's? - 05-12-2009, 11:23 PM

I'm using multiple copies of images on DVD media in 2 different locations to back up images and for those, I use simplistic labeling on the jewel case so as not to damage the disc. (yes, I understand the risk of mix up, grin)

However, for my clients I would like to provide something more professional and clean looking than my scribbles with a Sharpie.

I thought about using a Lightscribe burner but they are monotone and very slow from what I hear. I'm also having a hard time finding a good one (read "NOT LG brand") that is MAC compatible. I got an LG, hooked it up and discovered that although the drive was MAC compatible, the software for the disk security, lightscribe, etc. was not.

I certainly don't want to use sticky labels as I know they can 'warp' and be a general PIA in time. (I dont know that I want a paper label going into my trayless DVD player in my MAC anyway, grin

The other thing I considered was a printer that will print on the printable DVD's ... but I hear that they will smear if you touch them with wet hands, etc.

So, what's a dude to do? I would ideally like to be able to get not only the text on the DVD's but possibly an image from the shoot as well. That leaves out text only printers.

How do you label your DVD's / CD's?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Peace ...

Don

I have an Epson R1800 and I use printable DVDs. Looks good and the software comes with the print so you can make your own designs.

I use the Epson RX680. It prints on CD and DVD. They look nice, but I don't get the exact color that I always look for. I guess its because of the printing to a non paper finish. I do like it. I recommend it since it is a all-in-one. I tend to use the copy, print, and the scanner most of the time. You can scan receipts to keep you accounting in place. Plus always have a copy machine handy. Here is the link.

I, too, am looking at the printable CD.
Is it true that the ink will smear if you happen to have wet hands?

If you use a dye based printer like the cheaper Epson's, yes they will smear with wet/sweaty hands. A pigment based printer will not have this problem.

When I used to go through the trouble of printing CD's with my Epson, I'd just grab some photo matte spray from Michaels and spray the top of the disc after printing. Sealed the dye and worked great.

I need to try this with my R1800. I've always just printed b/w adhesive labels on my laser. Doesn't look great but does the job.

Hmm. Used to seal marine charts with Clear Krylon. Bet it will work on CD/DVD's also.

LOL!

I'm sold, I'll be printing them with the new HP I got today. If the test print appears to have "wet hand" issues after it dries, I'll give em a shot of clear sealer.

Thanks for sharin' y'all! I appreciate your time.

Peace ...

Don

Looks awesome ... and I LOVE the Three Little Birds mp3 on your site!

That little voice put a smile on my face that hasn't been there in some time.

Thanks much...

Ok, I've just been lightscribing my DVDs/CDs. I have an Epson R1800 but have never tried to print to a CD. My husband isn't a believer it will work. He wants to know if you have to have a special brand of DVD/CD. Printing directly onto the disc doesn't mess up the images and it won't deteriorate the disc?
