Paper Guidelines - 10-13-2009, 11:05 AM

Are there any good guidelines on when to use a matte, metallic, glossy, canvas or other paper for printing, or is it really just plain personal taste? I was just reading a thread on metallic paper, "not for portraits" said some, but many love it and many say it depends on the colors, another loved it on B&Ws.

It's really just personal taste.

I don't want my prints to look like they came from a photo-lab, so I prefer the fine art papers, either with a matte surface or the newer fiber-gloss/baryta type papers. I like matte for images with lots of textures and where DMax isn't critical. I like semi-gloss for images with water, reflections, or saturated dark colors (matte papers don't handle these very well).

...and I like Moab entrada natural rag 300.

Imagine a world where there was one inkjet paper. Almost as scary as a world with one film and one enlarging paper.
