Canvas, Metal, what? - 05-04-2010, 08:49 PM

I took photos of a good friend of mine's daughter. I was planning on having this printed on a gallery wrap here at Precision but I don't want to lose her hands (due to the wrap). I want to do something kinda special and I don't want an ordinary print on regular paper. I've seen the prints on metal sheets. Do you guys like those? I also got photos of my family done and the prints are on this super cardstock magic stuff. They look awesome.

Anyway, can someone suggest a really cool type of print and where to have it printed? My budget is around $45-$75 and I'm looking for a 12x18 or larger. Thanks.

It's a really nice shot.

There is software/actions that can do image extension for gallery wrap, it basically adds a border around the image that is a blurred mirror of the inside edge of the image. that way once you do the wrap you still have the full image showing.

I'm pretty sure the Studio version of QImage can do it, as can Genuine Fractals. If you use Photoshop, you can probably find free actions that do it, try googling "Gallery wrap action".

There is an action by Ben Willmore called the Benski Wrap that has several extension methods for gallery wraps. It is an action that is for sale, but worth it in my opinion. I used it on a gallery wrap I did at a Randy Hufford workshop and it turned out great.

Thanks guys. I found a free one last night. I didn't get the chance to try it out. If it works, I'll post it here. If not, I'll probably purchase one. I didn't think that I could 'fix' the photo for print on a canvas wrap. Awesome!

mpix has a mount called a "standout" mount which can be in any of the papers that they have -- basically a box with the image on top. Looks awesome in my opinion and is in your price range

WHCC has some nice Float Wraps which are a big seller for us with the Senior crowd.

Millers just came out with a version as well, but I have not yet ordered a sample.

You could always put a black border around the entire image. We have done that in some of my large pano's where we dont want to lose part of the image on the wrap. It looks very nice and allows the image to pop more.
