MPIX/WHCC Grain problem.... help! - 08-12-2010, 09:06 AM

So I've uploaded pictures before that look fine in photoshop and look grainy in mpix, I also have this problem with color but have learned to adjust for that usually. (other programs match mpix since its calibrated, but ps has different looks to it).

Anyway, I uploded this picture today and it looks HORRIBLE! Never has it been that bad. Here is a screenshot of the image in mpix and in ps, the pic is not just of the jeans but I zoomed in on both so you could see the picture size/quality is not the problem here. I also uploaded to whcc and I had the same problem.

What is wrong here??? I'm not sure what to do? I've also selected different sized prints and it doesn't change it at all.

I've never really paid attention to how the photos look in ROES, I think that's just a rough preview, not a soft proof.
Are your prints coming back looking like that?

With the color problems, yes. They always look a bit more orange-ish when they are printed, but I account for that typically. And in the past when its just a little grain, I have gone back and run noise ninja.

I suppose I just assumed it would look like that... perhaps not?

Do yours always look like they should?

Mine always print fine.
But for looking grainy in the preview, a lot of that is because the ROES software is scaling the photo to fit the preview window.

As for your colors, why does it say the photo is in CMYK in your screen shot? If you are sending them to WHCC or MPIX like that you will see a major color shift. They need to be in some kind of RGB flavor.

As an aside from your question, CMYK utilizes halftoning, so each colored dot is not actually a complete dot so to speak. It is just enough for us to perceive it as solid. CMYK is used for press (think magazine, newspaper, books, etc) where it is based on the "white" coming from the paper, rather where in RGB, white is a basic in all of the colors.

I see photos that are grainy in programs like FastStone Viewer, but look fine on my monitor in Lightroom, and print beautifully. Are you using the color profile for Mpix Pro? If you are using their color profile, and your photos are coming out orange, that would be an issue for me. Then again, if your sending a CMYK image... that could also be your problem.

The CMYK is from a different file, the image shown is RGB. :)

I guess I will print and cross my fingers!

Are you using Millers profile, or are they color correcting? If your unhappy you should reach out to them. They have awesome customer service.

No, I've selected to not color correct. I did call several months ago to try to rectify the situation, they were very nice but not so helpful. They couldn't tell me why photoshop was one way and their program was the other. They did try to have me fix it, but to no avail.

What color space are you using in PS, and what color space are you saving your print files in?
sRGB, aRGB, ProPhotoRGB, etc...? Photoshop is color space aware, but it might be the ROES isn't (at least for the preview).

I think Jake is probably on the right track on this one. sounds like a color space issue (at least for the orange shift that you are seeing).

monitor calibration does not seem to be the issue in this case as I can clearly see the difference in the sample that you posted.

What does an image look like when you compare photoshop image to something like a windows preview? If you see the same differences then it would seem to me to be a colorspace issue. I would bet that you are in aRGB in photoshop and windows/ROES is using an sRGB space

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

Jake/ Dobrick- When I open the file in another other than photoshop the color is orange. I did a post about that here and I couldn't seem to fix it. I am in sRGB for the work space, I am not sure how they are saved exactly or how to check, but when I open a saved file, it says (RGB/8). Does that help?
