I purchased some Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper / Matte Finish (#S041605) but do not think I ordered the correct paper. I picked up some non-Ultra Premium Presentation Paper / Matte (S041257) locally after this package shipped and it looked like cardstock. Once I open the box, I can no longer return it.
Help!! The package states that it is for "photographic prints with a true matte finish". Is this really what I need for non-glossy photos? I am new to printing and confused.
I am printing using an Epson 1400. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Hey Jennifer,
Paper is one of those personal tase things.
But matte paper is really flat. I have some. But I think it has limited use for me.
You can get non-glossy and still maintain a photo look.
I have some Epson at home that has a pearl finish. I will look and let you know what it is when I get home.
My current favorite is a smooth paper. It is glossy with a slight texture.
The ones you probably want to avoid are the ones called ultra-smooth. Those are the glossy.
Most paper makers will sell sample packs.
That is a good way to go. You can see the surface and try a print or two.
There are way to many paper choices.

If you picked that up at Precision Camera, take it back and have them show you samples, then leave with the right box of paper.
True matte is better for some B&W prints and some "watercolor" prints. Luster is my preference for non glossy portrait photos. I refuse to print on glossy paper (with the exception of dye-sub event printing).
Look for Epson premium or ultra premium luster. Both will serve you well.

Jennifer,
The paper I was referring to is Epson Premium Luster.
My current favorite is Canson Infinity Platine Fibre Rag.
I generally only print B&W.
My issue with matte papers and B&W is they seem to lose contrast.
Matte papers just don't get as good a black as a semi or gloss paper.

I went ahead and ordered some paper from Red River - sample pack of paper, Polar Pearl Metallic and Artic Polar Satin. Their descriptions seemed a little more detailed for the intended use... and the ICC profiles were an added plus. Based on your feedback , the Matte is definitely not what I need. Should have ordered the Epson Luster. Looks like I will be shipping this back to Epson unless anyone local is interested in the paper.
Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Just an FYI.
When I had my 2200 the Red River profiles sucked for it.
When you get the paper, the poop sheet will tell you witch Epson profile to use.
I got much better results using the suggested Epson profile.

Dang! I have been having difficulty getting the Epson ICC profiles (too dark) to match what I am seeing on my newly calibrated IPS monitor. Was really hoping to aviod more headache with a good profile.

I had the same problem in LR.
I started paying attention tho the exposure histogram.
I pushed the exposure as far as I could without blowing anything out.
That has worked for me.
The video John linked to also looks like a good approach.

Thanks for the suggestion! I went in and created a contact sheet bumping the brightness 10 points up in succession. Looks like increasing the brightness by 20 should do the trick.

Welcome to printing. Q.A. is now in your court. When you do get it right you will feel good.

The UPS truck just dropped off my order from Red River Paper..... OMG! I am in love with the Pearl Metallic!! I ran my first 13x19 print and it turned out great using the Epson ICC profile (+20 on brightness in Lightroom too). The trees and the mountains glow!
Here is the image printed....
