Quality drop in Mpix? - 05-23-2011, 01:40 PM

Are there anybody else experiencing the drop in print quality from Mpix?

I am unsatisfied with some (not all, just some) of the prints in my last few orders with Mpix. The problems have been ranging from prints being too dark, blue tint on black, and a light spot in black that doesn't exist. Most of these prints were low-key Sportraits. Some prints were re-orders and when I compare them from the previous prints, they are definitely lesser quality:(

I am now thinking about switching to a different lab. My friend suggested I should upgrade to Mpix Pro instead of going to a totally different lab because it's easier for me with my Zenfolio website... But I am not sure. How much better is Mpix Pro compared to Mpix?

I use millers which is the same as MPix. I'm happy with them, although I've recently joined up with Black River Imaging. They're a bit cheaper but I haven't gotten any prints from them so we'll see.
I have noticed some prints to be a little dark from Millers, but I assume any errors in print are due to my monitor not being calibrated.

I recently sent some test images off to Bay Photo and was very impressed with their processing/printing of the images. I had used MPIX prior (with no issues), but I think Bay Photo does a better job.

I love Bay Photo. I use them through my Smug Mug. I haven't checked prices of directly dealing with Bay, but through SmugMug, they're like three times the cost of getting prints through BRI.
And the thing I like about Bay, is their choice of glossy. Most other labs I deal with only have "Lustre" as the standard finish, and if you want glossy, you have to go full Metallic. For some reason the paper feels/looks thicker from Bay, too.

No problems with MPix here, just ordered some larger pix and they were good to go.

Havent had any quality problem. They have, however, screwed up a couple of orders lately. (Frame on wrong print, missing print, etc.)

Bounce between MPixPro & FullColor which is in Dallas and has excellent customer service.

If you go with Mpix Pro, make sure to watch their calibration video. They highly recommend that you calibrate your display to their specs so that you will get matching prints (as closely as possible of course).

They will also run calibration prints for you after you do it.

I had a fall-off in quality with Miller's about a year ago. I moved all my large scale client work over to Pounds.

I hesitated going to Pounds because of the price difference, but over the last two years, Pounds prices have moderated and are much closer to Miller's.

I use Mpix as well, I did recently have a bad experience on a large print and had to have it re-printed 3 times, it never was perfect......

In comparison it was the only time that a clients print did not represent the digital file
